John Wood

Professor of Design

DipAD(Hons), ADF, FRSA

John was Deputy Head of Fine Art before becoming Professor of Design at Goldsmiths, University of London. In 2001 he co-founded the ‘Attainable Utopias’ Network. His most recent book ‘Designing for Micro-Utopias’ (Gower, 2007) is one of over a hundred of his publications that seek to reconcile ethical, environmental and philosophical aspects of design.

His most recent research (funded by EPSRC and AHRC-funded) challenges the notion of (environmental) ‘sustainability’ by developing methods that would deliver what Buckminster Fuller called a ‘synergy-of-synergies’. To this end he is working on tools and books intended to inform possible practices of ‘metadesign’.

John is also co-founder and co-editor (with Julia Lockheart) of The Journal of Writing in Creative Practice (Intellect). This initiative grew from their launching of the Writing-PAD Network, which currently has more than 70 member universities in many countries.
