Director, MA Studio

MA Studio Ltd have recently completed the new Age Exchange community centre and public library based in Blackheath South London, opened November 2012. The project involved extensive excavation and structural works to an existing C19th century terrace, and the integral design of the interior and garden. MA Studio work in the residential, retail, healthcare and education fields but keenly pursue educational and community projects at all scales. As well as buildings, the practice’s work includes landscape design, graphics and exhibition design, and most recently they have developed a series of interpretation panels for heritage trails for public spaces in Lewisham.

Madeleine was formerly a co director of Research Design established in 2003 with Charlie MacKeith. Projects included restoring the Grade 1 listed almshouse chapel, Boone’s Chapel in Lewisham, conserved, restored and adapted as a contemporary office and community gallery space. The project included landscaping a ‘physic’ garden shared with residents and community groups. Other projects included the Rockhouse, a contemporary coastal house and garden in Maine, USA, and numerous residential conversions many of them listed or within the Greenwich World Heritage Site.
Madeleine studied Mechanical Engineering and then architecture at the University of Manchester and diploma at the Architectural Association in London. She has taught and lectured since 2002, at the Universities of Cambridge, UWE, UEL, and UCL. She contributed to the book entitled ‘Eric Lyons and Span’, published RIBA 2006, ed. Dr Barbara Simms, and was co author of ‘Boone’s Chapel_History in the Making’ published in 2008.
